Antique Aryana Square

Pakistan: Made with natural dyes and handspun wool. These are woven as the Aryana carpets are, only the finishing process is different. These rugs are finished with a low and slightly uneven pile that simulates the look and feel of antique carpets. The dye materials include madder root which is collected from Northern Afghanistan and many other plant dye sources, roots and flowers all collected from Afghanistan or Pakistan. Only long staple wool is used; collected at the time of the spring shearing from the high mountain region of central Afghanistan. This raw wool is delivered to Balouchistan, a remote province in the western part of Pakistan, where it is washed, hand carded, and handspun by Mogol refugees (a little known ethnic group also from Northern Afghanistan). From here the handspun yarn travels to Lahore where the natural dye and finishing workshop is located. The yarn is dyed here and then sent out to the various refugee settlements in the northwestern part of Pakistan where the weaving takes place. All weaving, with the exception of very large pieces, takes place in individual family homes. Usually multiple generations of Turkmen women (grandmothers, mothers, and their daughters) weave alongside one another. Proceeds from the sale of this rug benefit Barakat Inc.
