19th century shawl from Kashmir. Hand embroidered and appliqué. These shawls with their characteristic boteh design were treasured by Victorian women and led to the manufacture of machine woven copies in the Scotish town of Paisley. These machine made replicas were know, of course, as Paisley shawls. This piece, however, is a hand made original work of textile artistry. Incredibly fine needlework.
