I fell in love with the beauty and mystery of oriental rugs more than 15 year ago. While traveling in the rug-weaving countries of Turkey, Pakistan and Morocco, I got hooked on the intricate designs, the vibrant colors and the cultural history of these extraordinary textiles. I like to call these carpets art you can walk on.
Nomad Rugs got its start in my garage in San Francisco more than a dozen years ago. I began importing carpets on frequent trips abroad and sold them on the sidewalk in front of my apartment on 24th Street in the city's Mission District. This little stretch of sidewalk became known as Chris' Bazaar. I've since moved up the street to a proper storefront. But I retain the same principles I've had since the beginning: offering unique rugs, great value and personal expertise.
Nomad Rugs specializes in new Naturally Dyed Rugs. I work with some of the best producers of contemporary carpets. I also collaborate directly with weaving families. This allows me to design unique rugs that you will not see in other shops. This personal relationship also enables me to ensure everything I sell is produced in safe and fair conditions.
I know selecting an oriental rug can be intimidating, especially if you have never done so before. But it doesn't need to be stressful. I take time with clients to explain why our rugs are unique and to help them find remarkable textiles they will cherish.
One thing I do that may be different than other rug merchants you may have visited: I always encourage customers to try a rug at home for a while before making a decision. Unsure about what might work with your décor? I also make home visits.
